After you dig someone out of an avalanche the rescue has only started. 

 

It’s rare someone who is rescued alive from an avalanche is uninjured.  Being ready to effectively respond to an avalanche requires a strong background in avalanche rescue as well as winter survival and first aid.  In this course we aim to give students both pieces of the puzzle.

Avalanche education curriculums don’t do a detailed enough job of addressing winter emergency response while longer more involved first aid courses like the WFR give you way more than you need. This course is meant to be targeted to the specific needs of a backcountry skier and rider, getting them ready to respond effectively to common emergencies including avalanche involvements.

After you dig out someone out of an avalanche the rescue has only begun.

Most patients who survive the initial avalanche will have some level of musculoskeletal trauma and be suffering from hypothermia.  Having a well practiced emergency response plan with the tools to treat trauma and exposure in a winter environment is essential.

In this course we aim to provide a comprehensive approach to avalanche rescue.   We will integrate transceiver rescue with the necessary skills to support a injured hypothermic patient in a winter environment.

Foundational Skills

Initial avalanche response skills and follow up patient treatment and emergency response.

  • Transceiver search and probe use
  • Effective rescue digging and team coordination
  • Musculoskeletal injury treatment and support, 
  • Treating cold related injuries and supporting hypothermia 
  • Shelter in place techniques 
  • Self evacuation techniques
  • Working with responding professional SAR
  • Emergency response planning and team equipemnt selection 

    Prerequisits

    To participate in this course students need to have taken a AIARE Rescue or AIARE 1 course.  If you have taken one you can sign up for just the one day add on session.
